Yael

Between numerous phone calls with her father to coordinate the purchase of the biggest diamond they’d ever sold, a meeting with Tahlia’s PA, who was organizing their Tel Aviv trip, a visit to the pet store to buy a cat carrier, and two long walks with Bruce to keep him happy enough not to go in for the “killies,” Yael was exhausted by the time she was ready to drive Toby back to his neighborhood.

Crying at the door, he’d indicated he wanted to leave a few times, but she was worried he’d get lost if he tried to find his way home by himself, so she’d offered him food, which seemed to keep him happy. He’d been sleeping in Bruce’s bed by the fireplace in between meals, and poor Bruce was so upset she was pretty sure he would have called animal welfare to take him away if he could. Unlike yesterday, Toby was acting like a normal cat, and she wondered if someone had drugged him before stealing him and he’d escaped from a car close to her home. It was the only explanation she could think of, and she was sure his owners would be delighted to have him back again. Her plan was to drive to the pub and ask around to see if anyone knew who he belonged to. If that didn’t get her anywhere, she’d take him to the vet so they could check the address on the chip: most cats were chipped, she figured, especially in a big city like London.

Yael put a blanket in the cat carrier and scanned the living room for Toby, but she didn’t see him anywhere. Aware that cats had a knack for hiding or sleeping in unusual places, she checked the kitchen cupboards and even got a ladder out to check behind the books on the top shelves of her bookcase, to no avail. “Where’s the cat?” she asked Bruce, who was contently nestled in his own bed again.

His ears perked as he looked up at her, then glanced around, but only a faint howl escaped him.

“Where’s the cat?” she asked again. “Come on, Bruce. Don’t tell me you haven’t been watching Toby’s every move. Where is he?” She tapped the cat carrier. “Look, I’m going to take him away. Isn’t that what you wanted?”

Bruce stared at her with puppy-dog eyes, then lowered his head and rested his chin on the edge of the dog bed as he let out a long sigh.

“Thanks for nothing,” Yael mumbled, nervously looking out for bloodstains on the rugs and the walls. If there had been “killies,” there would be evidence, but she saw nothing. Besides, she’d only left them alone for three minutes while she went to the bathroom. “Toby!” she yelled, heading upstairs to check the bedrooms. “Toby, where are you? I’m going to take you home.” She looked under the beds, in her wardrobes, behind the curtains, and even in the laundry basket, then checked the boiler cupboard and the shower until there was nowhere else he could be.
